Why People Are Turning to ‘Tweakments’

If you’ve browsed any aesthetic websites recently, you’ve likely come across the phrase “tweakments.” It’s a buzzword that encompasses a number of very popular cosmetic treatments, including fillers, BOTOX®, and CoolSculpting®. At our Boston practice, these targeted, subtle enhancements are favorites because they are very effective and involve little to no downtime.

Even though “tweakments” are seen as a recent trend, the conservative approach to aesthetic procedures is something we’ve been doing for years to avoid creating over-the-top, “worked on” results that don’t look natural. We’ve all seen the overdone lip augmentation that results from the injection of too much filler. A less-is-more philosophy can achieve a “filtered” appearance that enhances a person’s unique features without fundamentally changing them.

“Tweakments” generally break down into 2 categories:

Noninvasive

These procedures include laser skin rejuvenation such as laser skin resurfacing, skin tightening procedures such as chemical peels, and CoolSculpting for body contouring.

Procedures that break the skin

These include injectables, including BOTOX and Dysport®, dermal fillers, and KYBELLA® for double chin reduction.

Benefits of ‘Tweakments’

Besides the cosmetic improvements created by these procedures, other benefits of “going small” include:

  • They’re more affordable
  • They typically don’t require anesthetic, incisions, or downtime
  • People who are less inclined to get cosmetic surgery—especially men— are more likely to embrace nonsurgical procedures.

Of course, it’s important that you choose a provider with the training and experience to perform these procedures. Even though they’re nonsurgical, these treatments may create unwanted results or even pose a risk to your health if performed by an unqualified provider.

Younger patients, including some in their 20s, can also benefit from the preventative nature of treatments such as BOTOX. When used in minimal doses, BOTOX can help postpone the onset of certain wrinkles.

Patients must maintain good skincare habits, such as applying sunscreen daily, staying hydrated, and getting restful sleep, to appreciate the results of these cosmetic procedures.
