When choosing the best breast augmentation plastic surgeon, you might have a different set of criteria than met of your friend who underwent the same procedure. It’s normal to go into an aesthetic procedure with a laser focus on how you want to look afterward. However, safety and the quality and longevity of your results are just as important.

While everyone will have their vision of the best plastic surgeon, here are some factors to consider when making your own choice.

Look for Board Certification and Experience

Since (technically) any surgeon can perform a breast augmentation, you’ll need to dig deeper to see if your potential plastic surgeon is certified by the right board and experienced in the procedure. Your plastic surgeon should be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS)—the only plastic surgery board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties. Board certification ensures that your surgeon has had specific training in plastic surgery, passed rigorous examinations, and adheres to national standards of safety and ethics.

Breast augmentation, although a relatively safe procedure, requires expertise and experience to achieve your desired results. You may be at risk for serious side effects, scarring, or infection at the hands of a subpar surgeon. Some questions you should ask include how many breast augmentations they perform in a year and their complication rate.

A Face-to-Face Meeting Is a Must

You need to feel comfortable and confident in the person performing your elective procedure. An excellent way to gauge your comfort level with your plastic surgeon is by having a face-to-face meeting where you can discuss your goals and ask questions. After consultations, my patients leave with a clear understanding of my communication style, the recovery process, and what to expect before and after your surgery.

If you don’t feel comfortable with one of the surgeons you consult, it’s a good idea to move on to another board-certified plastic surgeon on your list. When you are not fully in sync with your surgeon, asking questions or expressing concerns can be difficult.

Ask for Before and After Photos

A before-and-after gallery of patient photos is an excellent way to gauge your breast augmentation doctor’s skill. Most plastic surgeons have a photo gallery on their website for potential patients to view. Look through as many photos as possible and pay attention to the patients with a similar body type and breast concerns.

Most breast augmentation patients at my Boston practice prefer natural-looking results and implants that fit their frame and lifestyle. Clearly communicate your wishes to your plastic surgeon and ask for photos that show how they achieved similar results for their patients. This blog post will help you know what to look for in before and after photos.

My goal is to make my patients feel comfortable about their upcoming procedure and make sure I answer all their questions. You can see some of my patients’ breast augmentation results in this before-and-after gallery.
