BOTOX® or Dermal Fillers: Which Is Right for Me?

Smiling woman considers whether she needs a BOTOX or dermal filler treatment.

Injectable treatments are excellent options for rejuvenating your face without the need for surgery. Both BOTOX® and dermal fillers provide satisfying results for our Boston-area patients. But how can you know which option is right for you?

When it comes to BOTOX and fillers, each has its own unique benefits–and can actually be even more beneficial when combined. In this blog post, we’ll discuss the advantages of each procedure and explain how you can enjoy the benefits of both.

Benefits of BOTOX

BOTOX helps smooth away fine lines and wrinkles, leaving the face looking more youthful and relaxed. The product’s principal active ingredient is botulinum toxin A, which relaxes the small facial muscles that pull and tug on the skin. BOTOX effectively diminishes a variety of wrinkles, including forehead lines, crow’s feet, and “smoker’s lines” around the lips. BOTOX can also be used to treat other issues, such as migraines or excessive sweating, but these uses aren’t quite as common.

A single BOTOX treatment takes around 15 to 30 minutes to complete. There is no downtime required after treatment, and you can return to your normal daily schedule right away.

Benefits of Dermal Fillers

Fillers add youthful volume to the face and fade fine lines and imperfections. Most fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body that can help hydrate and support the skin. Fillers come in a variety of different brands, viscosity, and potency, each designed to treat specific areas and issues. Dark areas under the eyes, hollowed cheeks, and thin lips can all be corrected with the right type and amount of filler.

Similar to BOTOX, dermal fillers require little recovery time. Most sessions take less than an hour to complete. Slight redness or bruising may temporarily occur around the treatment area, but ice packs can help ease those concerns.

Combining Procedures

BOTOX and dermal fillers can each successfully treat different issues. But many patients struggle with overlapping issues such as wrinkles and lack of cheek volume or fine lines and thin lips. When fillers and BOTOX are used together, patients can fight multiple signs of aging and enjoy comprehensive results. As both are nonsurgical injectable treatments, they pair well together and can be used as part of a regular beauty routine. Some evidence even suggests that BOTOX helps prolong the effects of dermal fillers containing hyaluronic acid.

Each of these injectables has its own unique perks. But no matter which option you ultimately choose, be sure to find an experienced injector to perform your procedure safely.
