Why Kybella®? Double Chins Bother Nearly Half of Survey Respondents

Frustrated and embarrassed by a double chin, our Boston patients often ask what they can do. They’re not alone. A recent survey of nearly 2,000 Americans revealed that the look of their under-chin area bothered 47 percent of them, and even more—49 percent—said the area negatively impacted their appearance.

The results of this survey by Allergan, maker of the double-chin-reducing Kybella®—were revealed at the March 14 meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) in Orlando, FL, to show how submental fullness (the pocket of fat right under the skin between the chin and neck) impacts self-perception, social perception, and behavior. The participants were American men and women between the ages of 18 and 65.

Survey respondents reported certain behaviors they adopted to minimize the appearance of their double chin, such as shying away from photos and avoiding video chats and conference calls.

While 78 percent of the respondents said they are more likely to notice a double chin on a woman than a man, a third of the men actually admitted that they have grown beards mainly to hide the area underneath their chin.

What is clear is that submental fat bothers Americans. But there is a solution in Kybella®, the first and only injectable treatment approved by the FDA to reduce the appearance of chin fat.

The active ingredient in Kybella®, deoxycholic acid, helps the body to break down and absorb fat. Diet- and exercise-resistant fat cells are often the cause of submental fullness, and when Kybella® is precisely injected to points under the chin, it works to destroy those problem cells, changing the look of that bothersome under-chin area.

The results of Kybella® can be maintained when combined with a balanced, healthy lifestyle. To learn more about Kybella® in Boston and other options for fat reduction, contact the office of Dr. Christopher Davidson online or by phone at (781) 237-7700.
