Reduced Scarring: My Approach to Breast Augmentation

When women come to my practice in Boston for breast implants they often have one overriding concern: scarring. I understand their trepidation. After all, what good is a beautiful surgical result if it’s marred by noticeable scars? In order to meet my patients’ demands, I’ve devoted a significant portion of my professional life to learning surgical techniques that minimize scarring. Meticulously made incisions, as well as thorough aftercare, can significantly reduce the prominence of the resulting scar.

Breast augmentation typically uses an incision in one of 3 possible locations:

  • The breast fold, located where the breast meets the ribcage
  • The lower edge of the areola
  • Within the armpit

Each incision option comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. However, one thing they all have in common is a discreetly placed resulting scar. Once healed, each of these should fade to a flat, faint scar camouflaged by a natural contour or feature of the body. This often makes them almost undetectable.

Different implant types also require different incisions. As a general rule, saline implants typically use shorter incisions because they’re inserted empty and filled with sterile saline once they’re in place within the body. This allows me to use a minimal incision without sacrificing the size of the implants. I always use the Keller Funnel® when inserting silicone gel breast implants, which allows me to use the shortest possible incision for those who choose silicone gel implants.
