Plastic Surgery | Boston | Dr. Christopher Davidson

Most people today are not as old as they look. They take care of their skin much better than they used to, and these days it is hard to tell when someone looks a day past 40. But, why should your age matter to anyone else? You should be able to look as young as you feel, and with that, we want to remind you to continue to stay in control of your body.

Many people turn to a facelift at our Boston plastic surgery practice to resolve their aging issues, and others want to deal with their aging skin on their own terms. No matter what life may throw at you, you should always put in a little extra time to keep your skin youthful. To help you in your quest to age naturally we have a few tips to help you stay beautiful after 40.

Build New Muscle

As our bodies age, we naturally lose muscle mass. The solution to keep your skin looking trim and youthful is to add weight training to your exercise regimen. This will offset your decrease in muscle mass as well as improve your energy levels, endurance and strength.

Change Your Anti-Aging Diet

Our bodies change for a reason, but mostly it is due to our metabolic rate. By the time 40 hits, eating all those processed foods and sugars becomes too much to digest and burn due to a poor metabolism. Metabolism is the body’s natural process of converting food into energy, and if your body does not use this energy immediately then it as body fat, causing metabolism to slow down and eventually gain weight. Your best solution to this is to consume more fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins.

Enhance Stress Management Plan

Most of us at this age can agree that they have a mountain of responsibilities. Whether it is raising a family, two or three job sites and caring for aging parents, all of this starts to build up our stress levels. Once we hit 40 it is more important to develop a habit to manage all the stress life throws at us. Try out one of these stress management solutions to help stave off the effects of aged and stressed out skin:

  • Yoga
  • Singing
  • Dancing
  • Meditation
  • Walking

Soak Up The Sun Responsibly

Before you go outside you must always take steps to help prevent aging skin from sun exposure. By now, more than 90 percent of visible changes in an individual’s aging skin are caused by the sun. It is also a common fact that people with fair or light-colored skin are more vulnerable to ultraviolet skin cancer. According to a study from the Proceedings of the Royal Society B journal, people with white skin are about 70 times more likely to develop skin cancer than individuals with black skin. Over-exposure to the sun is also one of the reasons why a person’s skin ages faster sin UV radiation influences dehydration and overheating, causing damage to the skin’s surface. As a precaution to help reduce the effects of sun exposure men and women should always seek shade, cover their skin with clothing including hats, wear sunglasses, and always apply sunscreen to ensure protection from UVA and UVB rays.

Many patients maximize their youthful skin habits when they start managing their anti-aging skin routine early on. Even in conjunction with a facelift they are able to keep the effects of aging to a minimum, when they follow age-defying routines like these. Take control of your skin and your body will look naturally beautiful well beyond the age of 40.
